digmybrand’s chief-geek and strategist, Manish Chitnis, has an investing view point on this WSJ article by Vivek Wadhwa on why MBAs are not a good fit for startups.
Manish feels that stereotyping is just plain wrong…
I’m not sure either approach is perfect — figuring out “the right fit” based on degrees or school choice or previous role are all shortcuts. It is the hiring equivalent of buying a blue-chip stock. It may allow people to say “Well, I did everything I could, he/she had an MBA from X!” but comes with a huge “stereotyping”-bias that hampers the founder from putting together the best team possible. Avoiding a hire BECAUSE he has an MBA is equally biased/inefficient. Lets face it, hiring is hard and figuring out team-fit is as important (perhaps more important) a skill for a founder as any product design or technical proficiency.
